SpotlightRUB-A-DUB, THERE’S A DOG IN THE TUB Hard to say who’s having the most fun at the Leon County Humane Society’s dog washes, held monthly during the spring and summer at the group’s Timberlane Road offices. Could it be the 40-plus volunteers, who usually end up wet after scrubbing, soaping and rubbing the pups dry? Or the owners, who leave with squeaky-clean pets? Or maybe it’s the 120–150 dogs each month who get the “spa” treatment. “Our dogs wag their tails the whole time they’re there,” says loyal customer Bob Rubanowice. He and his wife, Stephanie, have made a habit of bringing their rescue dogs, Sugar Bear, a lab mix, and Pasha, a shiba inu mix, for years. The final three dog washes of 2010 will be held from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on July 10, Aug. 14 and Sept. 11 at the LCHS headquarters, located at 413 Timberlane Road. The cost for a bath, optional flea dip and towel drying is $8 per dog. For an additional donation, dogs can also have their toenails clipped. The proceeds, averaging $8,000 to $9,000 each year, are deposited into the LCHS’s Animal Medical Care Fund — which pays the spay/neuter, vaccine and other medical expenses of adoptable companion animals, says “Dog Wash Diva” Liz Maryanski, who has coordinated the event for more than a decade. There are plenty of satisfied customers. “We have a lot of regulars, says Maryanski, who admits, “I know the dogs better than the people.” For more information, call (850) 224-9193 or visit lchs.info/dogwashes.html, which also includes hundreds of doggone cute photos. — Rosanne Dunkelberger Best Bets July 23–Oct. 10 ‘NASA Art: 50 Years of Exploration’ Explore the space program with Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz, Jamie Wyeth and Norman Rockwell in an exhibit composed of framed photographs, audio art, paintings and sculptures.
